Fun on Friday: Would You Buy a $500 Brownie?

  by    0   1

Would you pay $500 for a brownie?

Now, before you answer rashly, let me tell you something important about this brownie.

It’s covered in 24-karat gold.

Now would you pay $500 for a brownie?

Nah. Me neither.

But let me sweeten the deal for you. (pun intended)

This brownie is made with a Johnnie Walker Blue Label glaze. It’s also served in a humidor with a Monte Cristo cigar on the side.

Now, admit it. When I throw Scotch whiskey and a cigar into the mix, some of you are tempted, even at 500 smackers, right?

Unfortunately, there’s probably not enough alcohol in the brownie to make you forget that you just dropped $500 on — well — a brownie and a smoke.

But if you are inclined to eat gold food glazed with expensive booze, you’ll need to head to Los Angeles. You can only get this sweet confection at Baby J’s Burgers.

Chef Jason Harley owns the joint. And this is not his first foray into gold-covered food. In 2016, he debuted his $100 doughnut covered in the yellow metal at his downtown LA shop, Birdies.

I’ve written about gold covered food here in my Fun on Friday column from time to time. The whole thing kind of fascinates me. As in, I don’t really get it. I want to own gold. I don’t want to poop gold.

But when there is a demand, the market will provide. And there is apparently a demand for golden food. People are mixing gold into all kinds of foods  — including traditional blue-collar fare such as beer and chicken wings.  I’ve even told you where you can get coffee with real gold mixed into it.

Now, as for me, whiskey and a cigar aren’t going to entice me to plunk down $500 for a brownie. Of course, I don’t drink or smoke. So, there’s that. But in the big scheme of things, when it comes to brownies, Little Debbie works just fine. I can get a whole box for a buck-ninety-nine.

Some people might call me cheap. They might be right.

But people do like to fork out a little cash to eat gold. I think it’s the indulgence factor. It feels decadent and like you’ve “made it.” Maybe the reason I don’t get it is that I haven’t made it.  But regardless, the gold food thing definitely taps into humanity’s long-time love affair with the yellow metal. Gold has intrinsic value. You couldn’t sell a brownie wrapped in aluminum foil for $500. But when you serve food or drinks covered in gold, people realize it’s something special.

Gold is special.

In order to eat gold, you’re going to have to travel around a bit. I doubt you’ll find a gold covered brownie in your hometown (unless you live in LA). But if you just want to own gold in your portfolio, well, you can do that from the comfort of your easy-chair. Just call 1-888-GOLD-160 and talk to a SchiffGold precious metals specialist. You can even smoke a cigar and drink some Scotch at the same time. Meanwhile, they can explain how gold can diversify your portfolio and help preserve your wealth during the economic turmoil that is likely just around the corner.
