Stock markets have been extremely volatile this week, with massive swings in both directions. The markets rallied on Wednesday, primarily due to optimism about progress in the trade war. On the week, the Dow is up around 100 points, but it also put in new lows.

In his most recent podcast, Peter Schiff said he thinks the volatility will continue. It’s a sign of trouble in the economy – trouble ultimately created by Federal Reserve monetary policy.

Remember back when Janet Yellen was heading up the Federal Reserve and she claimed there won’t be another financial crisis “in our lifetime?” You don’t have to think back too far. It was just about 18 months ago. Tuesday, June 27, 2017, to be precise. But now that Yellen has vacated the Eccles building and taken up residence at the Brookings Institute, she’s changed her tune. In fact, she’s singing an entirely different song.

During a talk at the City University New York, this week, Yellen said she fears there will be another financial crisis.

Assuming she doesn’t plan on dying any time soon, she apparently means within her lifetime.

Peter Schiff appeared on RT Boom Bust earlier this week to talk about the trade war “truce” between the US and China.

The announcement that there was some progress in resolving the trade war during the G20 summit boosted stock markets on Monday (the day this segment was aired), but that lasted all of one day. The markets tanked on Tuesday as investors realized the “truce” really didn’t mean anything substantive. In the RT interview, Peter said we really need to keep our focus on the bigger picture, particularly the Federal Reserve and the dollar.

The stock market got a nice bump on Monday with the news that there was a “truce” in the trade war. That lasted all of one day. The markets tanked on Tuesday as investors realized the “truce” really didn’t mean anything. The Dow Jones plunged 799 points, a 3.1% drop. The S&P 500 declined 3.2%, while the Nasdaq was down 3.8%. As one news outlet put it, “investors are quickly realizing that the US-China trade war is not over. The tariffs already put in place remain. And new tariffs could be implemented if the two sides fail to make progress.”

Well, yeah. Duh.

In his latest podcast, Peter Schiff said he wasn’t surprised at all by the drop.

We talk a lot about bubbles in the economy.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve discussed the stock market bubble, the housing bubble, the auto bubble and the debt bubble.

Nick Giambruno simplifies things in an article he recently wrote for the International Man. He just calls it the “everything bubble.” And he says it will pop in the near future thanks to the Federal Reserve.

After Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell released a dovish trial balloon last week, hinting we could be close to an end of the interest rate tightening cycle, the mainstream has suddenly turned bullish on gold. A recent Bloomberg article proclaimed, “Gold may be poised to rally as speculation mounts that the Federal Reserve will hit the pause button on interest rate hikes in 2019.”

As Peter Schiff put it in his most recent podcast, Jerome Powell blinked.

In a surprising about-face, the Federal Reserve Chair hinted that interest rates are “just below” neutral, leading to speculation that the central bank might be close to ending its tightening cycle.  Peter said the Fed has basically been playing a game of chicken with the markets.

And the way the game of chicken goes is the markets keep moving lower and the Fed keeps talking about how great the economy is and how many rate hikes are coming in the future and somebody his to flinch. Somebody has to blink. It’s like you have these two automobiles driving toward each other and there’s going to be a major crash unless somebody turns the wheel. And it seems like it was Jerome Powell that turned the wheel first and in fact was chicken.”
