Fun on Friday: Gold You Can Throw Through Your TV
Video games have come a long way. Amazing graphics. Multiplayer options online. Gold controllers.
Yes. You read that right.
Gold controllers.
Yup. You can pick up a gold-plated PS4 controller for just under $14,000.
Yes. You read that right too.
$14,000.
It also features diamond-studded buttons.
According to the VG24/7 website, “The Lux DualShock 4 controller … is a garish custom DualShock 4, complete with 24-karat yellow gold as its coating, and multiple diamonds embedded in it. There are two versions, the ‘classic’ coming in at $8,495 while ‘deluxe’ is $13,995.”
Don’t be a cheapskate. If you’re going to drop bank on a video game controller, go with the deluxe. After all, “the classic version only features one custom button, the PlayStation button, while the deluxe version has a total of nine 18k gold buttons, each studded with multiple diamonds.”
I have no idea what all those buttons do, but nine is bigger than one. So, I want nine!
The company touts the controller as being “designed for the gamer with impeccable taste.”
I won’t be buying one.
It’s not that I don’t have impeccable taste. (Although I don’t.) It’s just that I don’t play video games.
Truth is I’m not a gamer. I kind of missed that boat. I was born, I’d say, two or three years too early to really get in on the video game revolution.
Now granted, my parents did buy me Pong. Remember that one? Two dashes ping-ponging a dot across the screen? Good times!
And later, I had an Atari system with classics like Space Invaders, Missile Command and Astroids. I played it some, but it really wasn’t my thing. I found it more frustrating than enjoyable. That’s basically because I sucked at all the games. I never really understood the fun. For me, playing video games generally involved lots of swear words and tossing of controllers.
Now, you know what I did find fun? Hanging out at arcades. See, back in my day, we had to leave the house in order to play the really good video games. We’d spend hours pumping quarters into games like Pac-Man, Galaxian and Cenitpede. I enjoyed that. Don’t get me wrong. I sucked at those games too. But arcades had other things to keep my attention. Like girls. And junk food. We didn’t have much junk food at my house and the concession at the arcade kept me supplied in sugar. Girls? Well, I was a teenage boy.
Anyway, the video game revolution passed me by. I never owned a Nintendo, nor a Sega Genesis, nor a PlayStation, nor an Xbox.
On a rather amusing side-note, I did work in the video game department of Toys R Us for a while. Why they put the guy who never played video games in that department remains a mystery. Given the TRU bankruptcy, perhaps it was indicative of the company’s poor management program. Or perhaps it had to do with the fact that the hardcore gamers I worked with couldn’t carry on a conversation with an actual human being. Looking back, I might have been the translator.
Anyway, here’s the burning question: if I buy a gold controller, will it enable me to actually play video games? I mean, play them well? For 14 grand, it had better.
On second thought, buying a gold controller with embedded diamonds probably isn’t a good idea — at least not for me. Visualizing me tossing a $14,000 controller into the TV makes me shudder.
Perhaps you’re like me – a non-gamer. But you still like the idea of buying gold. Just call 1-888-GOLD-160 and talk to a SchiffGold precious metals specialist. They can hook you up. After all, gold is still relatively inexpensive — but that probably won’t last much longer. And hey, they guys are pretty young. They might even be able to give you video game advice!
