UK Man Finds $2 Million in Gold in Kuwait-Era Military Tank

A collector of military tanks from the United Kingdom got a pretty good return on his $37,000 investment when he found gold bars worth more than $2 million dollars inside its fuel tank. Nick Mead is the owner of Tanks-A-Lot, a company that provides tanks and other armored vehicles for driving classes, private events, and movies.

Mead acquired the Iraqi army tank on eBay in a trade for an Abbot self-propelled howitzer and a British army truck. During the restoration process, he and his mechanic found five gold bars weighing about 12 pounds each tucked away inside the tank’s diesel tank. The gold was most likely looted from Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion in 1990. In 1991, Iraq returned 3,216 gold bars to Kuwait.

“When we found it, we were all laughing and joking and deciding what we were going to spend the money on,” Mead told The Sun. “My sister wanted a Land Rover and I would buy a Rolls Royce Phantom and chop the back off to make a pick-up truck.”

Mead contacted the police after finding the gold bars.

“We didn’t know what to do,” he said. “You can’t exactly take five gold bullion bars down to Cash Converters without questions being asked.”

Authorities took possession of the bars and gave Mead a receipt. It remains unclear what will ultimately happen to the gold.

Mead got to live out a fantasy we all have. He found buried treasure – well, at least in a sense. Haven’t we all imagined what it would be like to find a cache of gold?

We can all relate to Mead’s thrill as he began planning how to spend his sudden windfall. His story resonates with us because we understand the inherent value of gold, and we would all love to have some.

But what are the odds that you’ll ever find gold bars inside a tank? Yeah. Pretty much zero, but you can still make your dream of owning the sparkling yellow metal come true – and you don’t even have to shop eBay for old army tanks. You can just buy gold.

Granted, it’s not nearly as glamorous or easy as finding gold bars inside a fuel tank and you don’t get the instant gratification of becoming a millionaire in the blink of an eye, but owning gold is easily within your reach.
