Day 70: Trump’s Approval Now at 35%

  by    0   1

This week Trump’s approval rating falls to historic lows considering his term length. The downturn comes after the healthcare fail, his latest sweeping cuts to environmental protection.

Trump Pivots on Healthcare Reform, Now Courting Dems and Moderates

  • Republicans pulled the healthcare bill from the table after being unable to garner enough support to pass it.
  • Trump vowing to work with the Democrats and dissenting Republicans to craft a new bill.
  • House Speaker Paul Ryan on co-partisan effort: “I don’t want that to happen,” according to Reuters.

Ryan continues to tow the Republican ideological line, maintaining focus on walking back government overreach. “I don’t want government running healthcare,” the Speaker stated. “The government shouldn’t tell you what you must do with your life, with your healthcare.”

Free markets should determine prices, but the split between Ryan and Trump is likely to hinder both efforts. While Ryan continues to push policy now, Trump seems focused on salvaging what political capital he has left, rallying others to get a win on his top campaign promise.

Americans want healthcare, but don’t want to pay for it. No one yet has shown the political will to tell their constituents what’s in their best interests long term. If the government continues to offer subsidies and handouts, why would Americans want them to stop? The best thing for the country is to admit we can’t afford to continue fronting the cost for the entire country’s medical care while paying off zero debt. Peter Schiff weighed in on his latest podcast:

“Obamacare is going to end one way or another. It might be better that it dies of its own accord than being replaced by a rebranded Republican version. The Republican version wasn’t going to work either … It still might be better to go down with this ship because it might mean it’ll be easier to have a market based-solution as opposed to socialized medicine.”

Trump Gives Environment Regulations the Boot, Puts Him at Odds with Voters

  • Trump’s executive order risks his public favor, in order to make industry more competitive and prop up the struggling coal industry.
  • The order rewrites curbing carbon emissions, gets rid of the climate change mandate for government officials, and eliminates barriers from federal coal leases.

Overall, environmental regulations are more popular than ever among a majority of Americans, according to The Washington Post, which cites such changes as causing Trump’s approval drop. Hardcore conservatives are disappointed in his inability to overturn Obamacare, while liberals are up in arms over the deregulation of the environment.

However, such sweeping regulation reform shows Trump’s base of supporters he’s still capable of delivering. He campaigned heavily on deregulating the environmental regulations to spur economic growth. Trump supporters agree these regulations are barriers to US innovation and reviving manufacturing.

In Just 70 Days, Trump has Done Something Faster than Any Other President

  • Carter, Nixon, and Bush Sr. took years to an approval rating of 35%. Trump has hit it in his first 100 days.
  • The rate of fall is nearly eight times faster than Truman, who was the previous fastest, according to Business Insider.

The President has followed through in drastic changes that have angered the Democratic side of the base by overturning Obama’s initiatives. At the same time, he was disappointing his own divided party on healthcare, where they couldn’t get all the reluctant republicans in line. Pleasing everyone will be impossible, and more than likely Trump may have to settle with only pleasing his most hardcore supporters in the near future.
